Enrichment classes, one hour per week in groups not generally bigger than 10, have been running for Grade 2's - Grade 6's. In the next half of the year, the Grade 1's will also be included.
In the younger groups, we have explored the wonderful world of stories and have shared myths, fables and other magical stories.
In the older groups, there has been a module on Edward de Bono's 6 Thinking Hats and another on metacognition and problem solving through the Somerset Thinking Skills programme. We have enjoyed practising different types of thinking using the different coloured hats and appreciating the experience of consciously shifting our thinking.
The one group prepared a delightful presentation, still to be performed, of Lewis Carrroll's ‘Jabberwocky'. A side development of this module was to create our own ‘Jabberwocky' dictionary.
After attending Professor Karin Murriss's workshop on ‘Thinking without Barriers', we bought the materials and resources to be able to introduce the Philosophy club. It is an exciting method where ideas are played with collaboratively, all viewpoints are valued and, through skilful questioning, conceptual enquiries facilitated. This will be developed and explored further in the term ahead.
In order to honour the different multiple intelligences, there will be a change in some of the modules to create space for some other children needing extension .
