The Grove Primary School

Grade 2

The Grade 2's have been on an exciting outing to Hout Bay Museum and River this year. We learnt about the Water Cycle and how to save water. We were lucky enough to go to the top of the Hout Bay River, just below the nature reserve to look for small creatures and insects in the running water.

We learnt about capacity and had fun measuring with cups, jugs and all sorts of containers. We learnt about litres and millilitres. We also got to experiment with estimating things that float and sink. We had such fun!

Fairy e came to visit us from a faraway land. She taught us about the silent e on the end of some words that magically turn short vowel sounds into long vowel sounds. She shared her secret with us and also sprinkled us and our classrooms with magical fairy dust!

The Grade 2 classes followed the theme of "We get a kick out of reading" for the Readathon. Every class had to see if they could read enough books to score a goal at the top of the ramp. We all did very well!

The Grade 2 “Big Book”

Every couple of weeks, depending on our theme, we create a “big book” as a class.  Our big books are usually based on an existing story and are re-written, changed and illustrated by the children in the class.  The focus is on the language used to re create or change the story as well as the beginning, middle and end. Once the big book is completed it is hung up across the classroom and the children read it as a class every day.  Our classroom activities are then based on the big book, eg. Word searches, closes, unjumble the sentence, etc.  This system really seems to develop a love for books and words.  It also allows the children to be exposed to different vocabulary in a fun and interesting way.
