The Grove Primary School

Grade 4

Term 1

At the beginning of the year the Grade 4's were very excited to begin using the Apple Mac's in the classroom. Our first project which integrated English Language and Life Orientation was a "Me Book". The learners began by writing ten sentences about themselves and then took photographs that captured what it was they were trying to express. During the process they made use of iPhoto and iBook and later they were able to add music. They enjoyed sharing their "Me books" with one another. These can be viewed as you would, a movie clip. All the children loved the project and many could not believe what they had achieved.

The learners also enjoyed learning about the human body in Natural Science where the class did a number of activities around the skeletal, muscular and digestive system and on the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle.

The end of the first term saw the Grade 4's manage their own informal businesses on Cake and Candy Day. Learners were required to produce a business plan, make their own products, market them, sell these on the day and work out their profit. All this, without assistance from their parents!

Term 2

The second term saw our Grade 4's investigating the history of The Grove Primary and the Claremont area. Their imaginations were captured as they learnt about the time capsule buried beneath the Herschel Obelisk on the school grounds and they then got an opportunity to create their very own time capsule. This interest in our common school history was then integrated into Technology lessons by Mrs Alford.

The Grade 4's continued to acquaint themselves with the Apple Macs during the second term. They used an interactive website to research Helen Keller and used this information to type 10 captions about her life.  After printing them the children drew pictures which corresponded with their captions and created A3 posters which brought some colour to the corridors.

There was much excitement in our last laptop session of the term as Mrs Hacking taught the Grade 4's how to create their own cellphone ring tones using Garage Band.

The learners have worked extremely hard this term and we look forward to the new and exciting projects that await us in the remaining half of the year.
