Grade 6

Play rehearsals are well under way. See the photos of the Grade 6's doing their line dance.

Grade 6 is possibly the most important and defining grade in any child's life, as it is the gateway to future successes in life. As you step into Grade 6, you embark on a journey filled with the broadening of knowledge, acquisition of vital skills, and the creation of life long memories.  This is achieved through the varied exciting outings, tasks and events we partake in. Grade 6 is a year of experiences that ultimately result in meaningful learning, while having fun at the same time.

In the first term we go on our annual camp to ‘Back to Basics' in Grabouw. Here we are shown through a variety of activities how to work effectively as a team. At the same time learners are also given an opportunity to come out of their comfort zones and challenge their capabilities. Along the way they also learn how to construct a raft, orientate themselves at night and enjoy themselves in their natural environment.

The first term also involves adjusting to the new demands of being in the senior section of the school. We learn how to effectively use organisational, as well as time management skills. Grade 6's are also further exposed to subject specialist teaching, and how to navigate themselves through the expectations of different teachers.

In Grade 6, we focus on how to effectively research and put projects together, making learners responsible for their learning. Gaining independence from both their parents and teachers is a way in which we aim to empower Grade 6's.

Outings form an important part of our curriculum. Some serve to consolidate what is learnt in class, while others are based on an awareness of the world around us. To scaffold what was learnt in class, and as preparation for a research project on Dr. Christiaan Barnard, we visited the Heart Transplant Museum.  This outing was not only educational, bringing the history to life, but was enjoyable too.

At the end of term one, we went on an adventure packed fishing outing to Kalk Bay.  The excitement of catching a 10cm fish reminded us what it meant to still be a child. The outing was a wonderful way to get out of the confines of the classroom, have fun, and also to bring parents onboard as they were invited to spend the day with us.

In term two we continued building on the skills taught thus far.  The highlights of this rollercoaster term have been the two Science projects, done in conjunction with parents.  They are, the ‘Crystal Project' and the ‘Propagation Project'. These projects consolidate the Science skills learnt, namely; observing, experimenting, predicting, classifying, measuring, inferring and communicating. What an excellent way to put theory into practice!

We ended Term two with an outing to Silvermine Nature Reserve. This outing enabled us to enjoy our natural surroundings, develop an awareness of the beauty the Cape Peninsula has to offer us.  It also provided an opportunity to be physically active in the outdoors.  Here too, parents were invited to spend the morning with us.
