Afri Twin Schools, "Cinnamon Grove"

The Grove Primary School in Claremont is twinned with Cinnamon Brow C of E Primary School in Warrington, UK. In order to strengthen ties between both schools, Lisa McNulty paid a reciprocal visit to The Grove last week. Bernadette White-Phillips from The Grove visited Cinnamon Brow last year. Both schools are environmentally conscious (The Grove recently earned Green Flag status) and are working together towards the increased greening of  their schools, recycling, reducing energy consumption and creating awareness of global issues. Miss McNulty spent a week visiting with the Foundation Phase classes and gave a PowerPoint presentation about Cinnamon Brow during Assembly. Both schools have challenged each other to their own Olympic activities this year: athletics and reading. The results of the challenges will be broadcasted to each other using Skype. The Afri Twin project was formed in 2001 by Jayne Martin (Cape Town), who is passionate about education and the mutually beneficial enrichment that occurs from relationships between schools in the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Madiba Day

In true Madiba spirit The Grade 4's extended thoughts of care and good will to the children of Maitland Cottage Homes in Claremont. On Thursday, 28 April, the Grade 4's at The Grove took time to fill paper bags with gifts of soft toys, games, colouring-in books, crayons, face cloths and reading books. They decorated their bags with pictures of their favourite celebrities and pastimes, amongst other things. The care packages were completed with messages of love and friendship.

Two of the Grade 4 teachers delivered the colourful care packages to Maitland Cottage Homes in the afternoon.  Handing out the gifts, they saw first hand what a difference the Grade 4's 67 minutes of care and effort had made to children less fortunate than themselves. The teachers were able to relay to the Gr 4 pupils how their gifts had brought smiles to the faces of some 50 children! The Gr 4 teachers would like to thank the matrons at Maitland Cottage Homes for allowing them the opportunity to interact with the children for whom they care. In particular, they would like to thank The Grove Gr 4's for the kindness and effort that they put into creating the care packages.
